Colorado Springs is a big city with a small-town vibe. It’s the place to visit when you want to explore the outdoors and kick back with the locals. The best part? Booking an RV rental in Colorado Springs allows you to set up camp minutes away from where you play.
Colorado Springs sits at the foot of Pikes Peak, the mountain that inspired the song, America the Beautiful. The outcroppings of red rocks and sandstone bluffs divide the city, creating a distinct break between the mountains and the eastern plains. The landscape, combined with the weather, helps make Colorado Springs so likable. The best time to visit Colorado Springs is from May through the end of September when the weather is warmer during the day and chillier at night.
When you visit Colorado Springs, you won’t want to miss some of the city’s favorite venues like the United States Air Force Academy or the Olympic & Paralympic Training Center. Even if the city is just a stop on your way to Great Sand Dunes National Park or Breckenridge, you will see why people love Colorado Springs.
The view from the top of Pikes Peak is breathtaking. The summit of the mountain rises to 14,115 feet above sea level. To reach the summit, drive the 19-mile Pikes Peak Highway or purchase a ticket to ride the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway. Pikes Peak Highway permits small drivable RVs, but restrictions prohibit trailers, campers, and rigs exceeding 24 feet in length. The Cog Railway parking lot does not accommodate RVs or trailers, either, so for this activity, it’s best to leave your RV at the campground.
Garden of the Gods Park tops the list of top places to visit in Colorado Springs. The Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center serves as a museum, information center, and gift shop. This family-friendly park has free self-guided tours and paid electric bike and Segway tours. Garden of the Gods is easy to navigate in an RV. Before driving through the park, stop at the Visitor and Nature Center to find which roads and parking lots best accommodate larger RVs.
In Colorado Springs, people work hard and play harder. The city has miles of scenic trails for walking, biking, and hiking. Local favorites include the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail, Red Rock Canyon Open Space, and Seven Bridges Trail. Do you want to tackle a day-long hike? Try Rampart Reservoir Trail, a moderate 13-mile loop. You won’t need to worry about driving from Colorado Springs before dawn because, with a rental camper, you can stay near the trailhead at Meadow Ridge, a national forest campground. If you don’t have time for a day-long hike, but you want to push yourself to your limits, hike the Manitou Springs Incline. The Incline is a strenuous .9-mile ascent up 2,744 railroad ties. The elevation increases 2,020 feet from the base of the trail to the summit, and it’s considered one of the most challenging hikes in the area.
Colorado Springs has tons of kid-centered activities that adults will enjoy, too. Take your little animal lovers to feed the giraffes at Cheyenne Mountain Park. On hot days, especially after a long walk or bike ride, your kids might beg for a place to cool off. The Uncle Wilbur Fountain at Acacia Park is a popular spot for kids to splash and play for free. Got a sweet tooth? Visit Josh & John’s, a local favorite for handmade ice cream and shakes.
Campers who want a view of Pikes Peak and proximity to the hiking trails and geology exhibits at Garden of the Gods Park should check out Garden of the Gods RV Resort. This RV resort has full hookups, several upgraded sites, and a playground area for kids. The park’s location makes it easy for campers to use the city’s extensive trail system. America the Beautiful Park and Red Rock Canyon Open Space are both within walking or biking distance of the RV park.
Cheyenne Mountain State Park, located close to the Broadmoor Golf Club and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, is one of the best RV campgrounds in Colorado Springs. The park has twenty-three miles of multi-use trails and is known for its abundant wildlife. Most RV sites have full hookups, and all overnight campers have access to a laundry room, camp store, and shower house. Cheyenne Mountain State Park is near downtown Colorado Springs and only a short drive from the Manitou Incline and the Pikes Peak Cog Railway.
Do you want to stay between Colorado Springs and Denver, but you aren’t ready to drive in Denver traffic? Simplify your vacation by renting your RV in Colorado Springs and camping north of the city. Larkspur is the halfway point between Colorado Springs and Denver and home to the family-friendly Jellystone Park at Larkspur. Jellystone has world-class amenities and on-site activities for every age camper. The park is just minutes away from the Colorado Renaissance Festival in Larkspur and only a short drive from Philip S. Miller Park in Castle Rock.
