Our testing criteria

We tested many top-rated camping chairs and took them on local campouts, backyard barbeques, RV rallies, road trips, concerts, and more. We had people of varying ages and sizes set up, sit, and pack up the chairs and ranked our top picks on the following criteria:

Comfort: We understand that comfort is subjective. Our testers ranged in age from 16 to 82 and were 5 feet tall to 6 feet 6 inches tall.

Durability, stability, and usability: We opened, folded, packed, and carried each chair on our list to determine its durability, stability, and usability. We paid close attention to each chair's materials and critiqued its stability in various settings. Since we've even used several camping chairs on this list for three years or more, we have an accurate assessment of their ease of setup and breakdown.

Weight capacity: All of our recommended picks hold at least 280 pounds; in several cases, a few of our testers weighed between 300 and 325 pounds and didn't have a problem sitting in any of the chairs on our list — even on extended use.

Unique features or drawbacks: Chair features may or may not be important when shopping for a camping chair, but they should be mentioned just in case one of these features is a dealbreaker for your camping chair preferences.

Price: We focused on finding chairs that we've seen RVers and campers talk about around the campfire or ask about in online forums and groups. Since the price of camping chairs varies, the chairs in this review have a price point for many different budgets.
